The East Enlightens the West -Chinese Elements in Eighteenth Century Germany’s Wörlitz Landscape Garden
In the 18th century Germany used European artistic and cultural traditions and at the same time information on Chinese gardens to advance modernisation in the development of local garden art and of public green spaces and landscaping. The 17th and 18th centuries coincided with the golden age of the Chinese Qing Dynasty and a large number of accounts from East Asia, Chinese products and artistic products in the Chinoiserie style entered the markets of Europe. They influenced the ideas of the royal courts of Europe on landscaping. The reigning Prince of Anhalt-Dessau in Eastern Germany connected the construction of gardens and green spaces with the policies of enlightenment and reform. By adopting the ideas originating from China such as natural landscape in garden art, of constructing gardens as a symbol of governing a country and of gardens as a microcosm, he transferred garden art into the sphere of constructing public green spaces. In this way he achieved the goal of improving the aesthetic quality of public spaces and the modernisation of agriculture. By using the garden ensemble of the royal gardens of Wörlitz in the close to the Principality’s capital, Dessau, as an example, this book explores how the artists involved in constructing the gardens in Dessau transformed the Chinese garden style into a constituent part of German gardens. In this way, the Principality initiated a new kind of garden art.
